Dealer and test boats: removable plates

When a number may ride on a plate instead of the hull.

When a boat is used by a manufacturer or a dealer for testing or demonstrating, the number may be painted on or attached to removable plates that are temporarily but firmly attached to each side of the forward half of the boat (33 CFR 173.27(b)).

The plate's number follows the same display rules as any number: plain vertical block characters at least 3 inches high, contrasting, spaced and reading left to right (173.27(a)).

Making plates with the Dealer Desk

  • The plate is the number plus a 1-inch border all round, with corner marks for fasteners.
  • Print it at actual size twice: one plate per side.
  • Dealer numbers and how they are issued are set by each state; check your state's dealer rules.
